Other abilities Mario can perform include swimming, climbing ropes in a similar fashion to Donkey Kong Jr. There are also several blocks that allow the player to add bridges, ladders and springs anywhere on the screen for a short amount of time. The classic mallet item can be thrown upwards and can be used again if Mario catches it, allowing him to bring it to different parts of the stage. At any point, Mario can flip over onto his hands, which allows him to catch falling barrels, and can also perform higher jumps by timing his jumps from flipping, or by performing a jump while changing direction. If the key is left alone for a certain amount of time, it will return to its original place. 2, he is able to pick up and throw items or certain enemies, which he will need to use to carry the key over to the door. Mario will also lose a life if he hits an enemy or obstacle, though some instances allow Mario to withstand the hit, such as being hit while carrying an item. Mario is able to survive falling from certain distances, though will lose a life if he falls further. The game features various gameplay enhancements from the original game. Extra lives can be earned via mini-games, unlocked by collecting three special items in each level, or at the end of each set based on the total unused time from that set. At this point, players are allowed to save their progress, including their time for each level or for the total set. After the fourth level is cleared, a short cutscene is shown depicting a player's abilities that may be needed for the upcoming levels, or to introduce new kinds of traps. Every fourth level is a 'battle level' in which the player must either try to reach Pauline, like in the original levels, or defeat Donkey Kong by using his own barrels against him. He must pick it up and carry it to a locked door elsewhere in the stage. The subsequent levels follow a completely different game mechanic in which the player must guide Mario through each level to locate a key. The player is then presented with 97 additional stages spanning nine worlds, for a total of 101 stages with the very last one a fight against a mutated, larger Donkey Kong. After these four initial stages are completed, the usual arcade ending begins, but after a few notes of the 'victory theme' Donkey Kong revives, grabs Pauline again, and takes off with her, with Mario giving chase. 2.ĭonkey Kong begins with the four levels found in the original arcade game, in which Mario must reach the top of the level and save Pauline. While there are notable gags in the film, the only decent scenes involve self-referential humor and/or Neil Patrick Harris. Other than a few token references here and there, and some dumb subplot about needing to get a Christmas tree, this film almost ignores Christmas all together. Perhaps more frustrating is that the film barely even addresses the Christmas motif that gave this movie its title. But ultimately, the characters recycle the exact same lessons they learned in previous chapters. It's clear Hurwitz and Schlossberg wanted their characters to grow, and they try a few new angles to reach those points. The script, from Harold & Kumar alums Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, hits all the beats, but rarely seems to find a comedic center. By many accounts, shooting in the format is a major pain in the rump. The annoying 3D gimmick probably caused much frustration as well. He might end up a fine filmmaker in the future, but he allows everyone too much wiggle room and ultimately delivers one of the most unwieldy comedies of the year. Strauss-Schulson, a director best known for his work with College Humor, is simply out of his league here. It's like someone didn't tell him he was in a comedy. For example, Elias Koteas, who seems to be stepping in for Christopher Meloni who's offered cameo appearances in previous pictures, is far too intimidating and mean-spirited as a kingpin drug dealer. He doesn't get much of a performance out of any of his stars, who either play things with little interest, too over the top, or way too seriously. The film looks and feels like a poorly made video, right down to the bad angles, cheap lighting, flimsy staging, clumsy editing and constant (and I do mean constant) use of a bumbling truly awful film score. If I had to put my finger on what went wrong, I'd lay the blame largely on director Todd Strauss-Schulson's shoddy direction. The movie is funny at times, to be sure, and Neil Patrick Harris is hilarious (and oddly complex) as well, but the rest of the film is a misfire. So that brings us to A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas, a film that tosses out pretty much anything interesting about the previous two films, trading it for juvenile humor, old gags and jokes better fit for a direct-to-video sequel – one that would replace the two main actors with lookalikes. “Tim knows the pizza business and this company inside and out I am excited to see where he takes Snappy, because with Tim’s passion and commitment … the sky’s the limit. Sega's mascot has been with us for more than a quarter of a century and, in its wake, it has left us countless great memories. and the result is a playable delight that takes us down the path of nostalgia called Sonic Mania. As Sega has hired a group of great fans of the blue hedgehog to make a new game with the excuse of the 25th anniversary of their mascot. And this is why it is so important to keep an eye out for the way they treat them, and probably one of the best examples of this is Sega. Levels are packed with visual effects and beautiful scenery, thanks to the power of modern consoles and gaming computers.Ī gaming company's most important asses are actually its fanbase and the gamers out there who enjoy their games. Sonic Mania is easily one of the most vibrant and joyous games around, accurately recreating the 16-bit era visual style. However, the colorful visuals and beautiful pixel art are what truly seals the deal. The controls are super tight, the game flows incredibly well, and there's a great amount of gameplay variety. Generally speaking, Sonic Mania plays like a dream. There are both classic zones and “remixed” zones to play through, offering a mixture of nostalgia and more modern mechanics. As is tradition, you can also discover a hidden mini-game in each stage by locating a giant golden ring. Like in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, a second player can join in and control Tails in cooperative play. Each character has a handful of special abilities, allowing you to reach different areas and unlock new content. There are three playable characters: Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles. In order to retrieve the Phantom Ruby and defeat Doctor Robotnik, you must travel through 12 different zones with wicked speed, collecting rings and defeating enemies. Sonic Mania strips away the more modern mechanics and features that have dominated the Sonic franchise and opts for a retro gameplay formula instead. As the robots attempt to bring the ruby back to Doctor Robotnik, Sonic, Tails, and their pal Knuckles give chase. By the time the pair reach Angel Island, the robots have already discovered the source of the energy, a crystal of immense power known as the Phantom Ruby. On the way, their trip is delayed by Doctor Robotnik's evil horde of robots, who attempt to stop their arrival. One day, Sonic and Tails hop on their plane to investigate a curious energy reading from the nearby Angel Island. Like in the early Genesis games, the story in Sonic Mania is straightforward and appropriately retro in nature. It's hard to describe what this game did to me, I never expected this game to have such an impact in my life with the story and the main character's background which I can relate a lot. Overall, good game if you want to get your 2D Zelda fix. I was itching for some good ol 2d Zelda and this did wonders to me but I would’ve probably drop it otherwise since it does nothing to stand on its own. I'd like to collate some stats as the year progresses so to that end completion dates would be especially useful. There’s really no in-between in the world of car mods. Once you make a modification to your vehicle, any vehicle, it’s either an awesome addition that improves your ride or a ridiculous addition that detracts from your ride. So, before throwing stones at the Auto Salon/Max Power/HIN crew for being heavy on the visuals over everything else, just remember this kind of modding has been happening for decades. We write a lot about car mods here at Hot Cars because… well, because there are really only two ways you can go with a mod. Street Freaks were an American invention and never got to Australia, but the intention was to have massive visual impact rather than brain-bending quarter-mile times. Mick Curren's "Terminator" Holden Monaro below is probably what most Aussies think of when someone says "street machine".Įven the drag-inspired Pro Street scene of the late 1980s ended up being pushed to ludicrous levels (see below) which drove trends to milder looking cars - and this is exactly what happened with the Auto Salon scene as show cars gave way to more useable, faster and milder-looking JDM styling trends.īefore the Pro Street movement there were "Street Freaks", which are often mistaken for gassers (a popular drag car class from the 1960s). The pic below is by Chris Thorogood - thanks for letting me borrow it, Tappy!)īy 1981 the panel van craze had given way to the street machine scene, which is very similar to the American muscle car scene of the 1980s. You can read more about Simo's red van "Disturbia" HERE. They grew their own identities, like "Alley Cat", "Stormbringer", and far ruder names we can't publish here.īoth these Valiant (ie: Chrysler Australia, or Mopar) vans are modern builds designed to evoke that classic era. These show vans often ended up with massively chromed undercarriages and they were no longer fit for being used to haul timber or drive down dirt roads to quiet surfing spots. are you starting to sense a common theme here? Soon people were painting them wild colours, with murals and crazy trim jobs (with full crushed velvet, bar fridges, water beds and more!), while body mods saw aftermarket front-ends, high-wings, side-pipes, and more added on. Used by apprentices they quickly became popular surfing rigs, and for more nocturnal pursuits. For our International friends these high-roofed commercial vehicles are normally based around a ute but have access from the front seats. Ed Roth, the man who gave us Rat Fink and that whole genre of hot rod art, built many of these super-wild machines - like the Mysterion below.īack in the late 1970s Australia was overtaken by the panel van craze. Hot rods were born on the dry lakes and salt flats of the 1930s, '40s and '50s, but as city-based hot rod shows increased in popularity more people started building finer and finer-detailed machines that no longer put raw speed at the forefront of their intent.īy the 1960s many of these "show rods" had almost become caricatures of the very hot rods they were meant to be based off. Pick an era of modified car and there will come a point, probably 12 months before the style stopped being "on-trend" where the scene peaked in its craziness and how wild the cars got. While many of us remember the Auto Salon era because we lived through it (I worked on their magazine so I definitely can't forget!) the reality is every generation has a car styling fad that grows out of a niche and into a ludicrous, over-the-top, gaudy scene. Thumping subs rattling brains (check MOOG's out HERE), gaudy paint work, crazy body kit modifications and questionably engineered mechanical upgrades - these are pretty much the foundation for any generation of show car, as these types of cars have always aimed to bring in attention from the wider public. However, this era of "show cars" is, arguably, no different to fads that previous generations went through as well. MOOG's new car (seen HERE) caused a lot of people to question the drugs car-builders were taking during the 1990s and early 2000s. Traditionally the tea is served three times, with five minutes between each serving thereby giving a unique flavour with each drink. Peppermint is widely acknowledged by much of the populace has being a healthy drink, although there have been few clinical trials to back this up. Peppermint tea (also often called mint tea) is naturally caffeine free and very refreshing and cooling hot infusion. However adding peppermint leaves to hot water has been a practice that pre-dates this by millennia. Roman and Greek cooks often flavoured their sauces and their wines with peppermint. Over history peppermint has been used by cooks and herbalists, was written about the Pliny in 79AD, describing how the Greeks and Romans crowned themselves with and decorated tables with its sprays. The Pulegone is a natural insecticide and we have seen instances where both peppermint plants and citronella have been planted around the borders of coffee estates to naturally reduce the number of insects that may affect the quality of the coffee. Peppermint also contains tiny amounts of compounds including Limonine and Pulegone. This menthol content is ideal for making oil which can be used for both pharmaceutical, cosmetic and culinary purposes. Peppermint has a very high menthol content, with the Cuban plants being known for having the highest levels. It is possible to get specialist honey that has been made with the majority of peppermint nectar. Peppermint flowers produce large amounts of nectar and honey bees, in particular, find them irresistible. This means many gardeners cultivate peppermint in regularly watered pots. Peppermint is known as a hybrid mint and is a cross between water mint (mentha aquatica) and spearmint (mentha spitcata) it was 1st described in 1753 by Linnea’s but was wrongly described by him as a species.Īs many gardeners will know peppermint is a fast-growing plant which spreads very quickly after it starts sprouting. We purchase two products from Cuba, the first being Cuban Serrano and the second being our pungent and versatile Cuban Peppermint.
